ALEXANDRA: “In many ways, I defied the odds as a musician. Usually someone who is born deaf doesn’t become a singer, let alone a classical one. I realized music was my passion from a very young age, and that has never changed.
As a woman, I have constantly been told how to make myself seem more appealing to others, to always dress modestly so as to not cause distraction, and to do as I am told. I’ve always asked the same question, “Why can’t I just be me?” These limitations are no longer relevant nor acceptable, especially given the climate we live in. Everyone should feel comfortable being who they are, and performing any music that they connect with.
I suppose you could say, I don’t, by any means, stay within my limitations. I create to express everything I am feeling, including feelings that I was always told to suppress. I create so that others can see all varieties of classical music without it being pigeon holed. Whether I am making you laugh or cry, I hope that there’s something new and inviting that can be taken away from my performances, from my contribution to music. I strive for a classical world that allows more freedom and diversity, especially with women feeling more comfortable expressing themselves without limitations.”
